The dawn of a New Year always brings a number of interesting predictions for home decor in the coming 12 months.

We took a look at a lot of expert commentary and came up with this list of possible key trends in 2021:

Colors
- The Pantone Color Institute believes that Ultimate Gray and Bright Yellow will be a dominant this year, emphasizing resilience, optimism, hope and positivity. Earthy shades, warm colors and ocean hues are also predicted to be big in 2021, injecting a sense of calm and comfort.

Indoor Plants
- Given the amount of time many of us are spending in our homes right now, indoor plants have a role to play in helping to keep indoor air fresh and offer a calming glimpse of the outside world. Edible indoor plants are also likely to be grown more often, for similar reasons.

Smart Lighting
- Customizable smart lighting is expected to be popular, instantly changing the mood of rooms to suit multiple functions and their occupants' mindsets.

Durability
- Durable fabrics that can withstand multiple washes are likely to be a growing trend in line with the greater use we are making of our interiors at the moment.

Multitasked Spaces
- Rooms are likely to be reimagined to cope with the growing number of tasks they are being asked to perform, such as online learning spaces and accommodating fitness equipment.

Retro
- Antique and classic furniture styles will help to exaggerate comfort in familiar surroundings. That being said, it has been suggested that mid-century modern has become overused, following its recent revival.

Rustic/Rural
- Rustic "cottagecore" motifs can inject a touch of comfort into a wide range of interiors, even modern designs.

Home Offices
- With more and more people working remotely, home office decor is likely to continue to build on the emphasis it enjoyed for much of 2020. Having quickly set up an office in the home, many home owners will be addressing ways to make their offices look right, creating an atmosphere that mixes practicalities with the more traditional context of a home.

Open Floor Plans - A Different Balance - With so many rooms now expected to perform multiple functions, open floor plans are often less easy to achieve. Therefore we can expect to see some innovative ways of dividing space and re-configuring furniture layouts.

Hygiene
- Touch-free faucets, handbins and non-porous surfaces are expected to gain momentum this year.

Backyards
- It's anticipated that yard space decor will be given more attention in 2021.
